Balearic Shearwater

This lovely large Bird usually reside in France but comes to some Islands close to Britain and some Balearic fly over to England where they are sometimes seen by eager birdwatchers.

They float on the water and can also be seen taking shallow dives into the sea looking for fish which they often find.

They eat a variety of small fish that they find close to the Islands some of these are sprats, anchovy and sardines which keep them nourished throughout the seasons.

A lot of the birds seem to come ashore on the South coast of England and this is at least a good place to start looking for them when you go out bird watching.

 

Avocet

The Avocet is probably a bird that doesn’t sound familiar but when you see its picture you will definitely know this bird.

It has become pretty famous for being the emblem for the RSPB, so most people know the image well and most people have seen a few of these around.

They are mainly along the East coast in summer and old estuaries in winter.  They eat quite a variety of different foods, amongst them water insects, worms and crustaceans.

Arctic Tern

They are called Arctic Terns because they spend the winter
in the Antarctic.  During the long
journey back they drop off in the UK and even breed on some of the Northern
islands during the summer.

They are very pretty with their black caps and long pale
wings and swoop around a bit like swallows but they don’t stay in this county
that long and are soon off so you have to plan when you are going to go out and
try and spot some.

They depend on large shoals of fish to feed their colonies and
their young birds so they must settle in large fish areas otherwise they are
not able to sustain themselves and have to move to richer fishing waters.

Aquatic Warbler

Aquatic Warblers are found along the Southern coast of Britain in the summer.  GB is not their home they are just passing through on the way to Africa where their feeding ground is but a few of them can be spotted in the UK for a few months.

It is a quite pretty yellow brown colour so difficult to spot among the reeds and charities have been worried about their declining numbers.  This has been due to the fact that there a less of their favourite feedings grounds around now and they have been slow to adapt to new habitats.

They don’t seem that hard to feed because they eat spiders, insects, caterpillars and grubs which really they should be able to find anywhere in the world.  Still numbers have declined and people are worried about that.

Arctic Skua

The Arctic Skua can be seen around the coasts of the UK
especially during their breeding season. 
They skim low across the waves of the sea most of the time and rarely
come on land unless they want to breed.

They chase smaller birds across the waves and knock their
food out their beaks, then steal it for themselves but they also eat fish and
some eggs.

They are dark in colour with pointed wings and can fly very
fast.

It’s a frog’s life

It’s a frog’s life, talk and tour is on at London Zoo every
day at 2pm.  The tour is around the amphibian
wing of the zoo and you can see all the creatures that live there.

The talk is interesting and there will be a chance to ask
questions.  It is a great day out and
probably something you haven’t done before.

There are some old favourite amphibians in the wing and lots
of other species that you might not have come across, so there will be lots to
discover.

 

Bay Cats in Borneo forest

Some researchers associated with London zoo have been
studying Bay Cats because they have been worried about them.

Their habitats and natural living space have been eroded
because farmers who own the forests where they live have been using the forests
for logging that they can sell at a good price.

This has meant the farmers have chopped up the forests where
the Bay Cats live and they thought the noise and distraction would drive them
out of the forest.

However, they set up random cameras over the forest space
and caught sightings on film of all 5 species so they are still in the forest.

Does this mean the loggers and the cats can live happily
together or does it mean the farmers should leave the cats their own space
within the forest?
