London zoo’s Yak mother has had a tiny baby, it is the
newest addition to the yak herd. It
would be good to go and see the baby because yaks are unusual animals and it is
not often that you get the chance to see a baby.
It was able to stand on its own feet within a day, this is because in the wild it may need to
make a quick dash into a hiding place nearby if a dangerous animal approaches
the herd.
At London zoo it is safe in a very large grassy enclosure
that is shared by other grazing animals.
This is their home and London zoo hopes that the female yaks will
continue to breed and raise the numbers of yaks in captivity.
This will mean we will have a large number of protected yaks
and will ensure that the animals never die out and can at anytime be reintroduced
to the wild if and when it is safe and secure for the herd to live on its own
again.
