Golden plover

The golden plover has golden speckles and then suddenly turns black in summer. 

It likes the open moors in summer where there is plenty of food about and the weather is comfortable to lie in.  But towards the winter months they leave the moors for more sheltered accommodation.

The golden plover is about 28 cm and eats worms, slugs and snails.  It makes no attempt to build a big nest.  They just make a rough groove in the ground. They have buff coloured eggs and chicks that stay with the parents for 4 weeks and then are ready to fend for themselves.

They are lovely birds to watch, especially to catch the change in colour.  So you need to keep your eye on them throughout the year.
