The 500 remaining Ethiopian wolves are only found in a few caves scattered across the mountains.
They are a reddy brown colour, with a white neck and pointed ears and are quite beautiful. Unfortunately, their main diet is mountain rodents which have been in short supply as the population numbers fluctuate. This means the number of wolves also declines.
Farming of the mountain lands has reduced their territory and domestic dogs have spread diseases to the wolves which have spread among their packs and killed many of them.
They are intelligent and have a social order with hierarchies and are very sociable creatures. They live in the wild for about 13 year and are in some national parks. I don’t know if they can be tamed or kept as pets although some mountain people must have tried to tame them at some point.
