The killer whale is actually a member of the dolphin family. They have striking black and white colours and will come quite close to boats in the channel to play and show off.
They usually form into groups called pods. Sometimes the groups are small with just a mother and children other groups are huge with many males, females and young ones. They stay in these groups for social reasons but also hunt their pray in groups.
They eat fish such as cod and salmon but also seals. They voice a serious of clicks some of which are to find their way around but it is also a form of communication between the group.
Male whales can live to about forty years old and the females can live even longer to about 60 years old.
